Query Capital is a queer financial planning and sustainable investment firm started in 2019 by Landon Tan, CFP®. We continue to grow to meet the needs of our community.

We believe that queer financial stability is a part of thriving queer futures. We believe that individualized human support to navigate the complexities of our financial systems is a necessity and not a luxury, and should be made accessible.

The name Query is inspired by the Quaker tradition of "Advices and Queries" that balance recommendations with question-based contemplations that may or may not ever be fully answered. We welcome both your life's answerable and unanswerable questions about money as we walk them with you together.

Trans financial planner Landon Tan

As a fresh-faced, trans-masculine former spoken-word poet and social justice trainer, it was a bit awkward when I first followed in my father’s footsteps to begin working as a financial advisor back in 2014.

Instead of differentiating sex and gender, I was differentiating stocks and bonds. I began on-the-job training in portfolio management and financial modeling. I earned a Certified Financial Planner™ designation, considered by many to be a core standard of competence in the field.

I learned to love the nerdy quirks of the field and knowing I could do my part to help people to avoid unseen threats and go after what they want. I realized that I could use my knowledge of financial systems to act as a cultural translator and help empower my peers to make decisions with more clarity and information.

I hope that this work can lift up the people around me and clue them in to the secrets and the realities of the capitalist financial system we live in.

My background is in gender and sexuality studies and psychology. I see a great deal of overlap between my previous work in the psychology research domain and my present role at Query Capital. Much like the scientific process, financial planning requires making hypotheses, gathering data, performing analyses, creating tailored approaches for each client, and presenting findings in meaningful and accessible terms.

Seeking out financial guidance can be an incredibly daunting experience for many people. The prospect of facing misunderstanding, prejudice, or outright discrimination can be an additional deterrent for trans and queer people, as well as anyone else who feels like financial spaces are not comfortable, safe, or familiar to them. As a transmasculine person, I am deeply passionate about supporting and empowering the queer community through my work.

I am currently enrolled in Berkeley’s Certified Financial Planner education program. I grew up in San Francisco, CA and currently live in Phoenix, AZ.
